Guitar for Beginners Class One..

You don’t need an excuse to learn how to play the guitar. Any reason is a good one, perhaps you missed the boat as a youngster, or now you would like to take up new a hobby. The reason does not matter. Learning to play the guitar and then being able to play some easy songs you enjoy is the first goal. How you learn is probably going to be the difference between success and failure.

As a beginner you need some solid and reliable direction. A person who can evaluate you and make a plan that suits you best. To be fair, there is small number of people who have become good guitarists without lessons, congratulations, but it was not easy. Good guidance and patience is the key.

Generally, most teachers have a plan or use a series of teaching books, that gradually bring you to each level of playing with fun and easy techniques. Teachers are not always the best guitar players, but they know how to convey the info to you in terms you understand. Accordingly, a football coach may never have played football, but he knows the game and is good at teaching it to other folks.

That being said, it is fair to say that students that are willing to exert the effort, beyond their musical talent, along with a measure of sincerity and self-discipline will be successful. Your teacher will make an extended effort for you to learn, it is up to you to return that effort. Returning the effort shows your integrity.

A word of caution: One of the most harmful things a student can do, both musically and technically is rush head-on into material that is beyond his or her stage of development. Thus, establishing  a habit of error in both your mind and muscle memory. This habit of rushing causes what is termed “harmful physical tension”.  Harmful physical tension will result from attempts to force muscles to do that for which they have not been gradually and physically conditioned for. Briefly, your fingers, wrists and elbows are subject to injury by not conditioning yourself for each step.

Rule One would be: Know everything about your lesson or exercise before you begin to play. Study and understand what you have been taught before you go to the woodshed for some undisturbed practice time. If you don’t get it, a good teacher will gladly go over the material until you understand it. A must quality for a guitar teacher.

What ever age you become interested in a guitar for beginners class, finding a good teacher who meets these guidelines is mandatory. Read this again if you need to, and Enjoy.  Stay tuned for the next steps and rules.
